The Habitation Throw is a delight to knit and if you’re looking for a fun, quick blanket project using 4ply or sock yarn I’d definitely encourage you to make it. It is the perfect pattern if you haven’t knit a blanket before.
The colour wheel of 12 colours was hand-dyed by me. I wanted to find a way of using one of my hand-dyed colour wheels and the Habitation Throw designed by Helen Stewart seemed ideal. The Habitation Throw is an elegantly simple design. It was released as part of Curious Handmade’s Knitvent 2019.
The pattern was designed for using an Advent Yarn Collection. These annual yarn collections are popular and often designed and dyed as a collection by many Indie Dyers. Rather than using an advent calendar, I chose to knit a colour wheel separated by Opal 4ply Uni in Anthracite colour to contrast with my colourful stripes.

The Habitation Throw is edged with an I-cord edging as the throw is knit. It is knit in a squishy garter stitch with the dark grey used on the eyelet stitches. I used the charcoal grey on the corners.
I’m knitting a pair of helical striped socks using a rainbow of colours also separated by Anthracite charcoal grey. My project bag is a Zippered Sheep in Sweaters Project Pouch. It is the perfect size for a sock sized knitting project.
The Habitation Throw is a small lap blanket that also looks wonderful as a warm shawl when folded in half and held at the shoulder by a shawl pin. My shawl pin is handmade by Celtic Fusion Design. I’m not sure if they still make this style of shawl pin as I bought it a while ago on their Etsy shop.
There is nothing quite as beautiful as a vibrant rainbow of colours!
This is the perfect pattern for a new knitter or for someone who would love to knit a modern baby blanket as a present for a new baby.
I love your Habitation Throw and colors. I really want to make one, but the pattern intimidates me……any suggestions to get started?
Just follow the pattern line by line. Helen Stewart is very good at what she does and writes her patterns so you can tick off each row as you finish it. Read the pattern through and follow it word for word. You will manage to knit the pattern. And it is worthwhile doing. You will enjoy it as soon as you get started. If you aren’t happy with how it is looking, frog it and start again. I often do that. It is by far the quickest way of fixing something, so long as you haven’t gone very far with the pattern.
