Love Note Sweater

27 February 2022 By Nicolette 10 Comments

The Love Note Sweater is an enormously popular sweater designed by TinCanKnits.

It is a light airy sweater and a pleasure to wear but not on too warm a day as the kid silk will stick to you! For the weight of the sweater, it is actually very warm and cosy.

I achieved the correct tension on 6mm needles of 16sts/10cm (4″) but not the correct row tension. I achieved 23 rows/10cm (4″) instead of 24 rows.

As I’d decided to change the length of my Love Note and I was knitting the XL-XXL which gave me 12″ of positive ease, I didn’t fuss about the difference in Row gauge.

I chose not to cast on with a provisional cast-on. Instead, I cast on 80 stitches and worked 5 rounds of 1×1 rib.

Then I did an increase round k1, (k2, m1) to give me 118 stitches. After that, I continued to knit the beautiful lace yoke as written in the pattern.

One issue that I hit, is that my eyelets in the lace are not even for the left and right slanting shaping. I remember seeing a video for how to remedy this but cannot remember who did it or what they suggested! This is camouflaged by the fuzzy Drops Kid Silk in Colour 14 a clear red. I buy my Drops Kid Silk from Purple Sheep Yarns.

The Love Note Sweater is knit using a 4 ply and laceweight kid silk held together. The other yarn I chose was WYS Signature 4 ply in Cherry Drop 529. I did a swatch using a few different colours of Kid Silk before deciding to pair the two reds together.

The two yarns work wonderfully together and the finished sweater is a wonderful rich red.

I always read through the pattern and highlight everything that is to do with or related to the size that I’m knitting.

The photographs were taken at Navan Fort, just outside the City of Armagh.

“Emain Macha was one of the great royal sites of pre-Christian Gaelic Ireland and the capital of the Ulaidh. It is a large circular hill top enclosure – marked by a bank and ditch – inside which is a circular mound and the remains of a ring barrow.”

Navan Fort is a wonderful place to visit for a walk on a sunny afternoon. I’ve visited many times over the years and it is a magical place to spend time.

I did my usual slightly A-line shaped longer length body on my Love Note and really love how it looks with a pair of jeans.

Holding 2 yarns together and knitting on 6mm needles means the Love Note knits up very quickly with loose tension.

It is a beautiful sweater, a pleasure to wear and uses surprisingly little yarn!

Love your sweater! I am knitting my first pair of socks and happened upon your instructions for grafting the toe. Excellent! I have now got your site saved and will definitely be back.
Have to finish the second sock first, should go faster than the first, 4 months and about 40 restarts lol. Thanks for your help.

Your sweater is just lovely! The lace is beautiful and I bet the airy vents of the lace feel wonderful on a beautiful Spring day. I particularly like the drape on the back. The sweater just looks soft! My favorite kind❤ thanks for sharing your beautiful work and the lovely countryside!

Your Lovenote is beautiful! That color combo is just so pretty. How did you do the a-line? I really like it.

My favourite way of doing A-Line is to change the needle sizes. On this sweater, however, I knit the body under the arms for about 6″ and then increased 2 stitches on each side every 6 rows. I normally do this 3-4 times. It doesn’t require a lot of extra stitches to get a rather nice swing in the sweater. As I change a lot of my sweaters to A-line I usually place the sweater over one of the others to see if I like how it is looking. I always try the sweater on before I cast off, to check the length as well as the A-line shaping. I often put a lifeline in at the start of the shaping, in case I want to change anything.

    Hi Nicolette.

Your sweater looks beautiful. The colour is very rich.

Love the photos, especially the donkey – my favourite animal. As I’m in neighbouring Co Down we only live a few miles from Navan Fort but I’ve never actually visited it. You’ve inspired me to go there in the spring.

Look forward to hearing more about your crafts.

    Best wishes,

    Pamela

It is a lovely walk at Navan Fort. Well worth the visit. There are lots of pretty places near me that I only ever visit when I have family visiting and we are thinking of a day trip!

Thanks so much for your newsletter, I’m in Pennsylvania, US, and especially enjoy the pictures of your projects and of your local area. One thing in particular that I want to thank you for is being real!! You don’t get the gauge, adjust, you want the pattern different, adjust, the sweater doesn’t come out exactly perfect, you realize that no one will ever know or see. I think this is great to hear as some of us aren’t as accomplished in knitting as you. Thanks for sharing, thanks for your blog, have a great day! Jen
