Crazy Zauberball Striped Socks

19 January 2024 By Nicolette Leave a Comment

I adore Schoppel Wolle Crazy Zauberball and have over 40 colours in the Yarn Shop. It is the most exciting yarn to knit with. I’ve enjoyed knitting many different projects with it.

I used Schoppel Wolle Crazy Zauberball colour 1701 Parrot for these socks.

Crazy Zauberball Striped Socks

The Crazy Zauberball striped socks are great fun because every sock will be different and unique; the two socks will be different but obviously related, like fraternal twins.[Read More]

Hermione’s Everyday Socks

21 October 2021 By Nicolette 3 Comments

There is nothing so relaxing while on holiday than having a sock project to knit. For our last holiday in Brittany, I brought a couple of projects with me to knit. Hermione’s Everyday Socks was one of these projects.

Hermione's Everyday Socks

I really loved knitting Hermione’s Everyday Socks designed by Erica Lueder. And, I’m actually surprised that I haven’t knit any other pairs of these socks. Hermione’s Everyday socks is a free knitting pattern on Ravelry.[Read More]

Socktober 2021

2 October 2021 By Nicolette Leave a Comment

It is the beginning of Socktober for 2021 and I’ve had a flying start! I’ve decided to turn all of my single socks into actual pairs of socks…

I find sometimes, that I really look forward to seeing how a new sock yarn will look when it is knitted up. But sometimes, such as for sending out my recent newsletter showcasing the beautiful WYS Signature 4ply Christmas sock yarn, I only required one sock of each Christmas sock yarn for the photography, so, now, I want to knit the 2nd for each pair. Then I’ll have a lovely selection of Christmas socks to wear during December! That will be just too much fun![Read More]

We Love Denim Socks

23 February 2020 By Nicolette Leave a Comment

It feels like we’ve had never-ending cold wet weather. First Storm Ciara rolled through with Storm Dennis hot on her heels the following weekend. So many people in the UK have been affected by the incessant rain and flooding and I hope that you are safe and warm. I’m hoping that the sun will come out and give us a little bit of warmth in March. But looking out of the window at the trees and shrubs whipping around in the wind, it seems like a bit of a pipe dream.

I know we should wear waterproofs when we take Bene and Mya for their walks but we tend not to and we just arrive back cold, soggy and windswept. It is on cold walks that I find myself thinking longingly about leg warmers. I really should knit myself a pair of leg warmers that I can pull on over my leggings and tuck into my ankle boots. I suppose I haven’t because, well, I was around for leg warmers the first time around in the 1980s when I was going to my dance class and watching Fame on TV. I can’t honestly say I’ve seen very many people wearing leg warmers around here. Maybe I could be a trendsetter?

These socks are a golden oldie really… I knit them a couple of years ago and gave them to my Mum as a present. They were knit using the Philippa colourway from the We Love Denim range by Regia. The pattern includes a Dutch or Square Heel and Classic Toes. They came to mind yesterday when I was putting the ends of lines onto the Knitting Squirrel Sale Page and the last few balls of this range joined the Sale Page. It was a lovely collection all in tones of denim blue.

Pairfect Striped Socks

15 February 2020 By Nicolette Leave a Comment

A photo story of the Pairfect Striped socks. I loved how this yarn knitted up. I’m posting this as a photo story because this pairfect range is no longer available.

This post relates to the blog post Pairfect Hat and Cowl and The Box-o-Sox KAL 2016.

Halloween Hoolie Socks

31 October 2018 By Nicolette 5 Comments

We were up bright and early and had arrived in the Gap of Dunloe just after 7am to photograph the Halloween Hoolie socks. We wanted to photograph them before the tourists and jaunting cars arrived for the day. It could become pretty busy there throughout the day.

We found the perfect spot and parked about half way up near an old tumble down cottage. It was cold and the ground was damp with early morning dew. Neil fetched the waterproof picnic blanket from the car so that I could sit on it to change into the Halloween Hoolie socks.

We were aiming to get the rusty roofs in the background for the photos of these socks. I really love rust. It is just so natural and wonderfully photogenic.[Read More]

Box O Sox KAL 2016

31 December 2016 By Nicolette 4 Comments

Box O Sox KAL 2016 – Early in 2016 I was watching one of my favourite podcasts, Voolenvine. Kristin of Voolenvine Yarns who does this fun podcast mentioned her new KAL.

BOX O SOX KAL 2016…

My ears pricked up. Literally.

I don’t often join KAL’s, well, this isn’t completely true, I join but other projects I’m working on for the Knitting Squirrel to show how beautiful the new yarns look when knitted up, normally take precedence, so I normally don’t finish the KAL in time.

Box O Sox KAL 2016

But, I mean, a box of a minimum of 12 pairs of socks by the 1st January 2017… This sounded like a huge amount of fun. You’ll all know if you visit the Knitting Squirrel regularly, I do love knitting socks. This gave me the perfect opportunity to start 2017 with 12 lovely new pairs of socks just for me… positively decadent! I finished with 14 pairs of socks.[Read More]

Touch of Elegance Socks

23 November 2016 By Nicolette 2 Comments

Touch of Elegance Socks were designed as an elegant choice for using a skein of my hand dyed Merino Cashmere Nylon sock yarn in a rich Old Gold colour. For this luxurious yarn I wanted to add a touch of texture to the sock.

There is nothing quite as beautiful as a skein of hand dyed yarn. I love hand dyeing sock yarn. There is a touch of alchemy about the dyeing process. Part of the joy is that the depth and richness of the colours will still surprise you even if you have an understanding of colour theory.

Touch of Elegance Socks

The Merino Cashmere Nylon sock yarn takes the dye amazingly well. Hand Dyed Merino Cashmere Nylon Sock Yarn is a wonderful squishy soft yarn perfect for knitting socks, scarves, shawls, gloves and many other projects. The nylon content adds strength while the cashmere adds an element of luxury. [Read More]

How to Match the Colour Pattern on Fingerless Mitts and Socks

15 October 2016 By Nicolette 8 Comments

“Could you please tell me the best way to match the yarn for the second sock so you have a lovely matching pair?”

This is a question I am asked quite regularly.

KnitPro Karbonz Double Pointed Needles

I am busy knitting fingerless mitts for my niece as part of her Christmas present. I used a now discontinued Regia sock yarn (other beautiful sock yarns are available in the Yarn Shop) and 2.75mm KnitPro Karbonz double-pointed needles (which I really love using).[Read More]
