Broken Stripes Socks

25 September 2015 By Nicolette Leave a Comment

I love the colours of these lovely socks. They are comfortable and warm. I love the autumnal colours in the rusty metal. I photographed this sheet of rusty metal a while ago when I was walking on the beach. It had been washed up near the old boathouse. Amazingly rich colours of the rust and the interesting textures and jagged holes in the metal really appealed to me and had me reaching for yarn and needles even though these colours aren’t ones that I usually work with. I love purples and blues and greens so working with russets and golds are slightly outside of my comfort zone. But it is fun doing something different and I enjoy exploring different colour combinations.

I used one 50g ball of Crystal Palace Sausalito 8107 Fall Herbs and one 50g skein of Artesano 4ply Alpaca 8774 Ecuador to knit these socks. These socks would be equally beautiful knit using two solid-coloured Opal or WYS sock yarns. Imagine how glorious they would be combining a Crazy Zauberball with one of the solid-coloured sock yarns.

Leftover Sock Yarn Socks

3 September 2015 By Nicolette 4 Comments

If you love knitting socks, you can’t help but to accumulate leftover sock yarn. And if you are anything like me you keep all the leftovers since it is very difficult to throw away yarn that you loved enough to want to buy in the first place. When I started knitting these socks I decided to use lots of different yarns but within  an analogous colour scheme of pinky-purples, purples and blues.  These include a wide range of sock yarns from hand dyed yarns to the lovely printed patterned yarns.

I’ll include a cautionary tale at this point![Read More]

Fair Isle Zig Zag Socks

14 August 2015 By Nicolette 1 Comment

There is nothing quite as beautiful as moorland heather in bloom in a myriad of shades of purples and mauves. The flowers are a heathery mist across the landscape. Broad painterly sweeps of blue sky, green fields and heather carpeted moorland. Lichen encrusted rocks to sit on and enjoy a cup of tea together.

 Fair Isle Zig Zag Socks

It’s great how effective a simple overall fair isle pattern can be in a pair of socks. The Fair Isle Zig Zag Socks are made using two contrasting sock yarns Seed Stitch Chart a dark purple Opal sock yarn and a lovely mottled purple/mauve sock yarn from my stash.[Read More]

Fair Isle Beachcombing Socks

31 July 2015 By Nicolette Leave a Comment

I’ve always loved beach combing for sea glass. For years I searched on every beach that I visited and seldom found a piece of the elusive blue sea glass. Then after Bene came to live with us, we started visiting the tidal beach at Hazelbank. Bene loves the seaside. He loves to paddle and swim in the sea. He loves chasing his ball on the sand. He loves it on sunny days, overcast days, wet days, in hailstones, in snow. He just adores the beach. So walking on the beach has become a daily event every morning for us.

It was while we were walking on this beach that I spotted the first tiny piece of blue sea glass in amongst the pieces of mussel shell. It glinted in the light like a tiny sapphire gleaming in the sand.[Read More]

Beachcombing Striped Socks

29 July 2015 By Nicolette 4 Comments

I love wandering along the beach picking up pieces of driftwood or bits of sea glass. It is so relaxing to walk on the beach in any weather. I feel a sense of calm when I sit and look out at the waves lapping on the shore and feeling the warmth of the sun on my face. On the day we were photographing these socks there wasn’t much sunshine. We didn’t have any shelter during the heavy showers and then we’d have a quick dry spell to try and take a few photos.

Beachcombing Striped Socks

We brought a bag of sea glass with us to Crawfordsburn beach. I’ve seldom found blue or aqua coloured sea glass at this beach as there is mainly clear, green or brown scattered on the sand. Our sea glass comes from a tidal beach near to the old city landfill. There is nothing quite like the beauty of sea glass gleaming like jewels on the beach. It is gleaming all the more in these photos because of the showers.[Read More]

Nepeta Sock Pattern

25 July 2015 By Nicolette 2 Comments

I loved the colours in the skein of Hand Dyed Opal Sock Yarn – Nepeta colour way and couldn’t resist winding it into a ball as soon as it was dry. Glorious summer colours in a skein of sock yarn. I adore this colour combination and the beautiful catmint and hardy geraniums became the colour inspiration for these socks. I’ve always loved analogous colour schemes particularly on the cool side of the colour spectrum. This sock yarn goes from violet purples through purple to sky blue, silvery green and teal greens.

Nepeta Socks

I knew there would be a lovely swirling movement in the colours as I knit the socks and decided to use garter stitch stripes to add some texture to the legs. As I wanted the swirl to continue evenly down the leg I decided to knit the heel flap and turn the heel using the other end of the ball.[Read More]

Arne & Carlos Socks

19 July 2015 By Nicolette 6 Comments

I began knitting these cute socks back in February. Because when I’d finished knitting the Arne & Carlos Teddy Bear I still had most of a ball of this lovely Regia Design Line Arne & Carlos 3653 Star Night left. I decided to buy an additional ball of the sock yarn to give me enough yarn to knit a pair of socks. I had noticed when I was knitting the bear that the pattern repeat for this sock yarn was very long. So I decided not to worry about having identical matching socks.

Arne & Carlos Socks

I loved the colour of the blue 4ply yarn that I’d used for knitting the bear’s scarf. I’d used up a small amount of Diploma Gold 4ply for the scarf. I wanted the same contrast for the sock heels and toes. The perfect choice was the WYS Signature 4ply Spice Rack – Juniper 157. [Read More]

Evenly Striped Socks

30 April 2015 By Nicolette 1 Comment

It is hard not to adore striped socks. I loved knitting these striped socks. These socks are made using 2 different sock yarns. one is a dark grey Lang Jawoll Magic and the other is a lovely Hand Dyed Sock Yarn in greens and reds.

I used the dark grey Lang Jawoll Magic for the cuff and toe. The cuff is knit in a k1, p1 rib. The toe is a classic toe.[Read More]

Little Prince Socks & Fingerless Mitts

23 April 2015 By Nicolette Leave a Comment

Have you ever wondered just what can be made from 100g of sock yarn? I asked myself this question and decided to test it out with a ball of Opal Little Prince – Little Prince and the Geographer… I decided to see if I could knit a pair of socks and a pair of fingerless mitts.

Little Prince Socks & Fingerless Mitts

I made life a little harder for myself by making the socks a matching pair of socks. This meant that I had to remove the yarn from the ball after finishing the first sock to cast on the second sock in the right place.  All went well with the socks and they were finished leaving enough yarn hopefully to knit the fingerless mitts.[Read More]

Blue Fair Isle Leftovers Socks

11 April 2015 By Nicolette 2 Comments

When you love knitting socks, if you’re anything like me, you have lots of small amounts of sock yarn leftover. I love creating new projects that use the leftover sock yarn. The Blue Fair Isle Leftovers Socks used 4 different sock yarns. One was a commercial sock yarn and the other three were artesan hand dyed 4ply sock yarns.

Blue Fair Isle Leftovers Socks

I can’t give you the specific colour names of these yarns as their tags are not with the yarns anymore, but I know who made or dyed the yarn.[Read More]

“it is pure potential. Every ball or skein of yarn holds something inside it, and the great mystery of what that might be can be almost spiritual”
