We were lucky to visit the Tangwick Haa Museum on Northmavine when we visited Shetland in the Autumn. The changing exhibition at the Museum for 2015 was ‘The Way We Did It.’[Read More]
Cashmerino Aran Crochet Throw – Pt 1
I’ve a very exciting holiday coming up this year. My mum and I are going on a road trip together around the Southern part of Ireland. It will be the first holiday that we have had together and I’m really looking forward to it. We have the cottages booked for a week in County Kerry and a week in Connemara.
I always love to have a few projects that I can photograph when I am on holiday. As I only have a few months before we go I decided that I’d like to crochet a throw for the trip.
I haven’t done any crochet for a long time, well not since I turned my granny square blanket project into a granny square scarf…[Read More]
Lang Jawoll Magic Striped Socks
I love knitting with the Lang Jawoll Magic Stripes sock yarn. The yarn has a slightly fuzzy feel when you’re knitting with it that turns into a beautiful halo to the finished sock. But on a cold morning walk, on the beach, the three pairs of socks I have knit for myself using this yarn are always the ones I reach for first. The socks are just so warm.
These gorgeous Lang Jawoll Magic Striped Socks are knit using the colour 840046 on 2.75mm Clover bamboo double-pointed needles. This yarn has such a long colour repeat that I really didn’t attempt to knit matching socks so they are a fraternal pair which I think adds to their beauty.[Read More]
WYS Holly Berry Christmas Socks
When the WYS Holly Berry Christmas yarn and the delectable Cherry Drop arrived into Knitting Squirrel’s Yarnshop in December, it was accompanied by the free WYS Holly Berry Christmas Socks pattern designed by Emma Wright. My mum fell in love with these socks when she saw the pattern, so I decided to knit them for her for Christmas.
I was a little late casting on these socks and wasn’t at all sure that they would be finished in time! Which, is also the case with this post which I had intended to post in mid January!! It seems a little bizarre to be writing a post about Holly Berry Christmas Socks in February but better late than never?
Kaffe Fassett Shadow Stripe Socks
Gosh, on a cold winters night is there anything as nice as toasting your toes in front of the fire with a mug of hot tea and a couple of biscuits… yes, this can be improved by adding a pair of warm hand knit socks onto those toes!
Some sock yarns are just perfect for a pair of men’s socks particularly if he prefers socks that are a little more subtle in their colour scheme. One of my favourite sock yarns is Shadow Stripe 3871 from the Regia Kaffe Fassett Design Line. The great thing about Regia sock yarn is that it feels nice to wear but is a machine washable tough hard-wearing sock yarn.[Read More]
Searching for Seals on Shetland
Seals were one of the animals we hoped to see when we visited Shetland.
Happy Valentine’s Day
Wishing you a wonderful romantic Valentine’s Day!
My Valentine Fingerless Mitts have become my go to sock yarn fingerless mitts pattern. They just fit so comfortably and look great on. These were knit using Sweet & Spicy 2 in Chilli 8616 a delectable pink and biscuit colour combination that is very romantic and feminine. Perfect for wearing on Valentine’s Day!
Much as I adore the Sweet & Spicy and Sweet & Spicy 2 ranges I can hardly contain my excitement that Sweet & Spicy 3 will be with us soon!
Dyer Consequences
Kelly Flynn and her friends are struggling to deal with acts of vandalism to their property when one of the customers of the House of Lambspun yarn shop is murdered, in Dyer Consequences, the fifth Knitting Mystery by Maggie Sefton.
Kelly is an accountant who has recently arrived in Fort Connor in Colorado. She has discovered the joys of knitting and spends a lot of time with her new friends in the yarn store next door. What’s more, the House of Lambspun is attached to Kelly’s favourite coffee shop Pete’s. Kelly’s cottage was bequeathed to her by her aunt and she is now also the owner of a ranch in a nearby Bellevue canyon (complete with 15 alpacas).[Read More]
John Arbon Sock Yarn
Have you ever wondered how the sock yarn you’re using to knit your new sock with has been made?
I must admit that I do. I have always found the machinery that is used to create the fine worsted yarns that are such a pleasure to knit with, to be fascinating.
I came across a wonderful video on youtube recently that shows John Arbon’s traditional mill in North Devon that spins fine worsted yarns and thought I’d share it with you. There is music on the video.
The Knitting Squirrel stocks John Arbon’s Alpaca Sock Yarn and Exmoor Sock Yarn. Both of which are gorgeous slightly rustic yarns to knit with although they soften beautifully with wear and washing.[Read More]
Sockhead Slouch Hat No1
So far, this winter has turned into the winter of the hat. Particularly, the Sockhead Slouch Hat designed by Kelly McClure. If you haven’t come across this free pattern yet, you are in for a treat.
As soon as I saw the Opal Happy Sparkle sock yarn when it arrived at the yarn shop, I just knew this yarn would be utterly divine knitted into a sockhead slouch hat. If you read my blog regularly, you’ve probably noticed that I love purples, blues and greens. [Read More]
