Hot Waves Socks Become Cool

4 January 2013 By Nicolette Leave a Comment

Are you looking for a great striped sock pattern for using leftover sock yarn?

After finishing Mitt Envy I had plenty of the lovely clear blue silk sock yarn left and flicked through my sock pattern books looking for inspiration.

I saw Hot Waves designed by Lynn Hershberger published in Joy of Sox by Linda Kopp and knew that it would be beautiful in a cool colourway instead of the warm colours in the book. The pattern is a lovely combination of stripes and fair isle.[Read More]

Retro Hat Using Stranded Knitting

29 December 2012 By Nicolette 2 Comments

Retro Hat using Stranded Knitting came from The Handknitter’s Design Book by Alison Ellen, published in 1992 by David & Charles although she simply calls the pattern “Hats”.

Retro-Hat-Rialto-1

The hat pattern suggests using wool, cotton, rough silk or any DK yarn, so the combination of the Noro Silk Garden Lite which knits to a DK weight and the Rialto DK merino was perfect. The pattern started by casting on 6 stitches in the centre of the crown and then worked the increases for shaping the crown first, then the stranded knit chequerboard, and finally casting off at the edge.[Read More]

Fair Isle Beanie Moodboard

18 December 2012 By Nicolette Leave a Comment

But when you collect lots of single balls of different shades of shetland wool what do you then do with them?

How about a fair isle beanie?

Moodboard

If you are anything like me, you always find it interesting to see where other knitters get their ideas for a colour scheme. I love creating the mood board for a project. It is a wonderful way of seeing if I like how the colours are working together. My mood board tends to grow along with the project.[Read More]

Slouchy Fair Isle Hat

28 November 2012 By Nicolette 5 Comments

This beautiful slouchy Fairisle hat is inspired by Wild Heather designed by Amanda Jones and published in Irresistible Christmas Gifts to Knit a free pattern booklet that came with a magazine.

As usual, I made changes as I am pretty much incapable of knitting a pattern without tweaking it.[Read More]

Norwegian Star Hat in Stranded Knitting

21 November 2012 By Nicolette Leave a Comment

The Norwegian Star Hat is a really cute stranded knit hat using only two yarns. Looks great on. It is a excellent choice for improving your stranded colour work skills although not for a complete beginner.

While perusing patterns for fair isle hats on Ravelry I came across a wonderful collection of hat patterns “Hats, knitted in stranded knitting with multicoloured yarn” designed by Ruth Sorensen.[Read More]

“it is pure potential. Every ball or skein of yarn holds something inside it, and the great mystery of what that might be can be almost spiritual”
