Wandering Socks – Tetrapod Trackway

30 July 2016 By Nicolette 4 Comments

The Tetrapod Trackway on Valentia Island dates from the Devonian period over 365 million years ago.

Neil really wanted to see the Tetrapod Trackway although I’ve got to admit that I teased him that the Tetrapod just looked like an enormous prehistoric newt![Read More]

Wandering Socks – Ballaghsheen Pass

27 July 2016 By Nicolette 2 Comments

I’d just finished the Knit Circus Socks and had a ball of Opal Beachcombing in Message in a Bottle colour 8734 nestled in my bag just in case I needed to cast on a new project while we were out. I cast on the new sock while parked in a car park in Waterville beside the road to Glencar that we were going to drive along. It was late in the day, and I wanted to have the cuff cast on so that I could knit on our way back to the cottage on the Gap of Dunloe.

Wandering Socks Beenkeragh Gap Kerry

We’d decided to take a narrow road through the mountains. After looking at the map, we noticed that it went pretty much through the mountains (as the crow flies) towards where we were staying. As we drove, we passed an old graveyard with a ruined church in it. Deciding to stop, we wandered through the graveyard looking at the hundreds of marker stones. There were a few almost beehive shaped rock burial mounds.[Read More]

Drachenfels Shawl No. 1

20 July 2016 By Nicolette 4 Comments

Knitting the Drachenfels Shawl designed by Melanie Berg of Mairlynd has been on my must cast on list for many months. I enjoyed every moment of knitting this beautiful shawl pattern.

Drachenfels Shawl

I knew that I wanted to use my own hand dyed 4ply Blue faced Leicester sock yarn for the shawl. It is such a gorgeous lustrous yarn and takes the dye amazingly well.[Read More]

Kerry Bog Village

16 July 2016 By Nicolette 2 Comments

We intended to spend the day travelling around half of the Ring of Kerry but it wasn’t long before we were turning in to visit the Kerry Bog Village.

The Gypsy caravan was amazing. It really is hard to see how a whole family could live in the tiny space even though it was empty inside. [Read More]

Death by Cashmere

13 July 2016 By Nicolette 2 Comments

A group of knitters, who meet in Izzy Chambers’ knitting shop in Sea Harbour, Massachusetts, set about solving the murder of their friend Angie, after the local police write it off as an accident, in Death by Cashmere by Sally Goldenbaum.

Alegria Rib & Garter Stitch Socks

9 July 2016 By Nicolette 1 Comment

We decided to walk down to Dinis Cottage. A lovely walk on a lane way to the cottage with a small slipway. We had hoped to have a coffee and cake in the cafe, but unfortunately the cafe was closed, as they hadn’t yet opened for the summer season even though it was the end of May.

Slea Head Drive, Dingle

6 July 2016 By Nicolette Leave a Comment

Usually, I like to have a knitting theme somewhere within a post on the Knitting Squirrel. But I thought I’d write a few posts to share photographs of our visit to County Kerry and Co Galway. This is the gorgeous day trip we had on the Dingle Peninsula. We enjoyed not only beautiful scenery but also perfect weather! This post is based on my holiday journal.

We left early for our visit to the Dingle Peninsula. We stopped at Inch Beach shortly after we turned onto the peninsula.[Read More]

Beach Pebble Paperweight

2 July 2016 By Nicolette 2 Comments

Just imagine… you’re sitting on Lettergesh Beach knitting a sock and the pages in my notebook keep fluttering over in the breeze. I was ready for a break from knitting socks… so what to do next?

I found myself lying back on the patchwork quilt to enjoy the warmth of the sun on my face. Sitting up, I pulled back the quilt, and dug a pebble out of the sand. It had been digging into my back in a rather uncomfortable way.

Pebble Paperweight

Eureka!

A fun idea had come into my mind. Knit a woolly pullover for a beach pebble… voila… a paperweight![Read More]

Kate Atherley Baby Socks

27 June 2016 By Nicolette 4 Comments

I was looking for a nice basic Baby Sock pattern to knit as a present for my cousin’s baby as we were calling to visit on our way to Co Kerry, and came across this very cute Baby Socks pattern designed by Kate Atherley, while browsing on Ravelry. As Sarah is about 5 months old and it is coming into the summer, I decided to knit the 9-12 months size. She can wear them coming into the Autumn.

The baby sock pattern is really straight forward and well written. They really are the cutest socks ever! So sweet![Read More]

Rum Paradise Socks

25 June 2016 By Nicolette 7 Comments

We were up very early to drive up the Gap of Dunloe with the aim of photographing my Rum Paradise Socks. We wanted to be out before the visitors and jaunting cars arrived! The Gap of Dunloe becomes rather busy in the morning. Many people like to park at Kate Kearney’s Cottage and use it as the starting point for their visit to the Gap of Dunloe. Some choose to walk up the steep, narrow, winding pass. Others, opt for the pleasure of sitting in a jaunting car and looking at the lovely mountain views at the jaunty pace of a pony and trap. These normally go up to the ruined house three-quarters of the way up and then turn around and go back down.

Rum Paradise Socks

We found the perfect spot about half way up the narrow road beside an old cottage with a rusty tin roof. It was cool and the grass was damp with dew. Neil kindly brought the picnic blanket from the car so I could sit on it to change my socks.[Read More]
