Kate Atherley Baby Socks

27 June 2016 By Nicolette 4 Comments

I was looking for a nice basic Baby Sock pattern to knit as a present for my cousin’s baby as we were calling to visit on our way to Co Kerry, and came across this very cute Baby Socks pattern designed by Kate Atherley, while browsing on Ravelry. As Sarah is about 5 months old and it is coming into the summer, I decided to knit the 9-12 months size. She can wear them coming into the Autumn.

The baby sock pattern is really straight forward and well written. They really are the cutest socks ever! So sweet![Read More]

Rum Paradise Socks

25 June 2016 By Nicolette 7 Comments

We were up very early to drive up the Gap of Dunloe with the aim of photographing my Rum Paradise Socks. We wanted to be out before the visitors and jaunting cars arrived! The Gap of Dunloe becomes rather busy in the morning. Many people like to park at Kate Kearney’s Cottage and use it as the starting point for their visit to the Gap of Dunloe. Some choose to walk up the steep, narrow, winding pass. Others, opt for the pleasure of sitting in a jaunting car and looking at the lovely mountain views at the jaunty pace of a pony and trap. These normally go up to the ruined house three-quarters of the way up and then turn around and go back down.

Rum Paradise Socks

We found the perfect spot about half way up the narrow road beside an old cottage with a rusty tin roof. It was cool and the grass was damp with dew. Neil kindly brought the picnic blanket from the car so I could sit on it to change my socks.[Read More]

The Burren, Co Clare

Knit Circus Socks

On our drive from the Gap of Dunloe, Co Kerry to Connemara, Co Galway we decided to take a little longer and drive along the coast of the Burren, Co Clare. I visited the Burren about 10 years ago, but Neil had never been to the Burren. We passed a few pull in spots with coaches and hoards of people until we came to a small single car pull in spot beneath a steep slope.[Read More]

Slip Stitch Snowflake Socks

3 June 2016 By Nicolette 1 Comment

My Slip Stitch Snowflake Socks were inspired by the Sweet & Spicy Peach Socks. I pretty much used the same slip stitch sock pattern. The main difference was that I wondered how the sock would fit if I continued the slip stitch pattern down the sole of the foot as well as the instep. The easiest way to do this was to decide to knit an afterthought heel. I do love tweaking patterns. So much fun!

The Slip Stitch Socks are knit using Regia Snowflake in the colour Snow Suit 7707. Use a 100g ball of sock yarn of your own choice. I used 2.75mm Clover bamboo double pointed needles. [Read More]

Lucy Anklet Socks

23 May 2016 By Nicolette 4 Comments

I have wanted to knit a pair of cuff socks for some time now. I always think they look fun for wearing in the Spring, early Summer and Autumn. Very cute.

Cuff Socks 23

Last year I bought the book “A Cuff Above” containing 23 sock patterns by Cynthia Guggemos.  Several patterns in this book really appeal to me. The first to actually be knit are the Lucy Anklet Socks. In the book, the designer, gives 3 different options for the cuff: a ZigZag Eyelet Cuff, Eyelet Rib Cuff, or Little Fountains Cuff. All of the options give a simple lace cuff.[Read More]

Summer Holiday Knitting – What to Knit?

18 May 2016 By Nicolette 2 Comments

We are going on holiday this year to County Kerry and Connemara National Park in County Galway. So, of course, a multitude of ideas for summer holiday knitting projects are swirling through my mind.  What should I knit? Size of project? And the big question – how many projects?

Rainforest Socks 12

For me the ideal holiday project is easily picked up and put down – easily left in mid-round. Can be worked on while travelling in a car, sitting on a rock or stopping for lunch and doesn’t require me trying to hold a pattern down with nearby rocks to stop it blowing away in the wind.[Read More]

Basic Sock Pattern to Fit Shoe Sizes – UK 2 to 6, EU 35 to 39 and US 4 to 8

30 April 2016 By Nicolette 35 Comments

I regularly receive questions regarding the size of my sock patterns and how you will know if they will fit you or not. This is an important question because you don’t want to put hours into knitting a pair of socks to find they don’t fit you. To help with this, I have written two posts giving a basic top down sock pattern in 6 sizes. This is the first part of the basic top down sock pattern to fit Shoe Sizes – UK 2 to 6, EU 35 to 39 and US 4 to 8. I’m working on a second post which will cover Shoe Sizes UK 7 to 12, EU 40 to 46 and US 9 to 13.

Basic-Socks-XS-M-Sizes-1

One of the main problems when you’re reading a pattern is whether the pattern is written for UK, European or US shoe sizes. I’ve shown a comparison of all of the shoe sizes for knitting your socks in the chart below which covers Foot Circumference, UK Shoe Size, EU Shoe Size, US Shoe Size, Ladies Foot Size (XS, S, M) and Finished Sock Length from Heel to Toe.[Read More]

Sweet & Spicy 3 Saffron Socks

20 April 2016 By Nicolette 4 Comments

I’ve been so excited waiting for the 3rd Opal collection of Sweet & Spicy. It was worth the wait. I haven’t been disappointed. I’ve knit socks using two of the colours – Cocktail and Saffron. Both pairs look amazing.

Sweet & Spicy Peach Socks

7 April 2016 By Nicolette 6 Comments

These cute socks were knit using Peach 6751 from the original Opal Sweet & Spicy. I really love the colour combination of the peachy orange with the graduating tones of grey.

The socks knit up very quickly because of the slip stitch pattern. You very quickly get into a  rhythm, slipping every 4th stitch. [Read More]

Opal Play K3, P1 Ribbed Socks

26 March 2016 By Nicolette 7 Comments

These socks are knit in a k3, p1 rib pattern which is very comfortable to wear. Ribbed socks are great because they are so stretchy and fit the foot and leg very comfortably. I made these socks for Neil for Christmas and then promptly reclaimed them until I had photographed them. He’ll be pleased to find them neatly folded in his sock drawer!

Opal Play 8824 k3 p1 rib socks

I adore Opal yarns because the colours in the collections are so beautiful and love how Opal Play knits up into the very striking wide striped pattern. Also, the finished socks take a lot of wear and are an absolute dream to wash.

Wishing you lots of sock knitting fun!
