Fair Isle Zig Zag Socks

14 August 2015 By Nicolette 1 Comment

There is nothing quite as beautiful as moorland heather in bloom in a myriad of shades of purples and mauves. The flowers are a heathery mist across the landscape. Broad painterly sweeps of blue sky, green fields and heather carpeted moorland. Lichen encrusted rocks to sit on and enjoy a cup of tea together.

 Fair Isle Zig Zag Socks

It’s great how effective a simple overall fair isle pattern can be in a pair of socks. The Fair Isle Zig Zag Socks are made using two contrasting sock yarns Seed Stitch Chart a dark purple Opal sock yarn and a lovely mottled purple/mauve sock yarn from my stash.[Read More]

Fair Isle Beachcombing Socks

31 July 2015 By Nicolette Leave a Comment

I’ve always loved beach combing for sea glass. For years I searched on every beach that I visited and seldom found a piece of the elusive blue sea glass. Then after Bene came to live with us, we started visiting the tidal beach at Hazelbank. Bene loves the seaside. He loves to paddle and swim in the sea. He loves chasing his ball on the sand. He loves it on sunny days, overcast days, wet days, in hailstones, in snow. He just adores the beach. So walking on the beach has become a daily event every morning for us.

It was while we were walking on this beach that I spotted the first tiny piece of blue sea glass in amongst the pieces of mussel shell. It glinted in the light like a tiny sapphire gleaming in the sand.[Read More]

Beachcombing Striped Socks

29 July 2015 By Nicolette 4 Comments

I love wandering along the beach picking up pieces of driftwood or bits of sea glass. It is so relaxing to walk on the beach in any weather. I feel a sense of calm when I sit and look out at the waves lapping on the shore and feeling the warmth of the sun on my face. On the day we were photographing these socks there wasn’t much sunshine. We didn’t have any shelter during the heavy showers and then we’d have a quick dry spell to try and take a few photos.

Beachcombing Striped Socks

We brought a bag of sea glass with us to Crawfordsburn beach. I’ve seldom found blue or aqua coloured sea glass at this beach as there is mainly clear, green or brown scattered on the sand. Our sea glass comes from a tidal beach near to the old city landfill. There is nothing quite like the beauty of sea glass gleaming like jewels on the beach. It is gleaming all the more in these photos because of the showers.[Read More]

Blue Fair Isle Leftovers Socks

11 April 2015 By Nicolette 2 Comments

When you love knitting socks, if you’re anything like me, you have lots of small amounts of sock yarn leftover. I love creating new projects that use the leftover sock yarn. The Blue Fair Isle Leftovers Socks used 4 different sock yarns. One was a commercial sock yarn and the other three were artesan hand dyed 4ply sock yarns.

I can’t give you the specific colour names of these yarns as their tags are not with the yarns anymore, but I know who made or dyed the yarn.[Read More]

Blue Fair Isle Fingerless Mitts

1 February 2015 By Nicolette 2 Comments

The Blue Fair Isle Fingerless Mitts are just beautiful. Gorgeous to wear.

These fair isle fingerless mitts are based on the Small Lozenge Star Gloves designed by Wilma Malcolmson and printed in Knitting Fair Isle Mittens and Gloves by Carol Rasmussen Noble. There are many beautiful charts in this book.

I used Mussel Blue from the Jamieson & Smith Shetland Heritage wool range for the main colour for these mitts.[Read More]

Red Fair Isle Fingerless Mitts

15 December 2014 By Nicolette Leave a Comment

I love knitting fair isle. I also love fingerless mitts. So the Red Fair Isle Mitts are just the perfect combination. Fingerless Mitts are just so useful when walking the dog and throwing his sticks. J&S Shetland Heritage is 100% real shetland wool and is a wonderful fibre to knit with. The finished mitts are incredibly light weight yet so very warm and cosy.

The Red Fair Isle Fingerless Mitts are based on the Cunningsburgh Gloves pattern in the Art of Fair Isle Knitting by Ann Feitelson.

Acht Fair Isle Hat

5 December 2014 By Nicolette 2 Comments

I really enjoyed knitting the beautiful Acht Fair Isle Hat designed by Hazel Tindall.

“Acht is the Shetland dialect word for a valuable possession – hopefully you will find that is a good description of your finished hat. The sides are quite long – in Shetland’s windy climate it’s good to be sure your hat won’t blow off.” Hazel Tindall

Having the sides quite long is also a benefit for our cold wet Northern Irish climate too. It is nice to have warm ears!

Fair Isle Swirl Socks

6 October 2014 By Nicolette 2 Comments

Who doesn’t love the lively combination of stripes and a touch of fair isle? One of my favourite combinations. Stripes have become a common theme in my sock knitting recently, but more about that in future posts! For the Fair Isle Swirl Socks the fair isle is worked as a wide stripe filled with an all over swirling two colour diagonal pattern. This is balanced by the wide dark stripe on the foot.

Fair Isle Swirl Socks

I chose two colours of Artesano Alpaca 4ply for the plain stripes as I liked how they contrasted with my main yarn choice. I have no idea how well the alpaca will wear so chose not to knit it on the heel or toe area where it would get a lot of heavy wear. The alpaca is a wonderfully soft warm yarn. The paler pink is Sweet Pea CA13 and the darker magenta is Venezuela 4345.[Read More]

Fair Isle Fingerless Mittens Moodboard

10 November 2013 By Nicolette 4 Comments

Have you ever considered whether you are a process or product knitter?

A couple of years ago, there was a lot of discussion on knitting blogs about product versus process knitting. Product knitters are the type of people who enjoy knitting so that they can enjoy the finished object. While a process knitter enjoys the process of the knitting more than actually having the finished object.

There isn’t really a question about this for me… I am a process knitter. Yes I really love having the finished object. I love seeing it completed and all the ends sewn in, blocked and sitting neatly, ready to be worn.

But ohhhhhh… the real joy comes from starting something new. A new knitting project to sink my teeth into. You know, that moment, as you open the bag of new yarns, in lots of yummy colours, and you lay them out on the table. Your mind starts whizzing at all the different things that could be made from this. (Yep, I suspect the more sensible product knitter may actually have bought their yarn with an actual knitting pattern in mind. But that isn’t really me.)[Read More]

Orange Rainbow Socks

15 October 2013 By Nicolette Leave a Comment

The Orange Rainbow Socks are the third post in the Rainbow Socks Collection Series following on from ‘What is the Perfect Basic Sock Pattern?‘. The collection came about after my search during the summer for the perfect basic sock pattern.

Do you love the colour orange?

Every so often it is good to stretch yourself and try using one of your less favourite colours. Orange isn’t one of my favourite colours Although, having said that, these socks are wonderfully autumnal!

So, what do you do to make using a colour that isn’t a favourite easier to work with?
