Kristin Nicholas Socks

1 December 2015 By Nicolette 5 Comments

I love the Kristin Nicholas Socks. The self-patterning yarn by Regia Design Line is absolutely gorgeous. The colours are very rich although the self-patterning yarn is a little bit busy! But I just love it. The finished socks are just so comfortable and cute.

I was careful to cast on the socks from the same point in the pattern on the yarn as I wanted a matching pair of socks. This also meant that the afterthought heels were started from the same point in the patterned yarn. [Read More]

Who Owns These Hand Knit Socks?

25 November 2015 By Nicolette 8 Comments

I’d draped the newly finished Slip Stitch Socks on the picnic table while on holiday in the Cairngorms in September, as I wanted to take a few photos of them. We soon had a couple of interested visitors.

A few red squirrels were regular visitors, so we gave them nicknames. The two squirrels in this series of photos are Baby Girl and Tufty.

A Killer Stitch

21 November 2015 By Nicolette Leave a Comment

A review of A Killer Stitch, the 4th book in the Knitting Mystery series, by Maggie Sefton. Derek was a local alpaca ranch owner and, although Kelly Flynn did not know Derek himself, she is at once determined to find out who has murdered him.

A Killer Stitch by Maggie Sefton

Derek was well known around Fort Connor for loving and leaving the ladies and Kelly soon discovers that her new spinning instructor at the House of Lambspun, Lucy Adair, had been Derek’s latest conquest.  [Read More]

New WYS Signature 4 ply Sock Yarns

14 November 2015 By Nicolette Leave a Comment

West Yorkshire Spinners have created some gorgeous new WYS Signature 4-ply sock yarns that we’ve just added to the Knitting Squirrels Yarn Shop. The WYS Signature 4-ply range are very popular sock yarns that feel wonderfully soft and squishy because of the 35% Bluefaced Leicester wool. West Yorkshire Spinners have been winners in the British Knitting Awards in both 2014 and 2015 for these great yarn ranges. You don’t know what you’ve been missing until you wear a pair of socks knit using this exceptional sock yarn!

WYS Signature 4-ply Christmas Special

In time for Christmas, West Yorkshire Spinners have created the gorgeous Limited Edition Holly Berry. This yarn brings together all the classic Christmas colours in a unique print. As always when WYS develop a new print in Signature 4 Ply they also like to launch a complementary accent shade. This allows knitters and crocheters to combine both shades to create eye-catching garments and accessories. Cherry Drop is a stunning deep red which complements Holly Berry perfectly.

These two great yarns can be purchased here in the Yarn Shop.

Daydream Inspiration Socks

10 November 2015 By Nicolette Leave a Comment

I love knitting with the Opal 6ply yarns. I used the lovely 8353 for the socks in Daydream of a Castle in the Air. This one is Daydream 8355 Inspiration. The DK weight 6ply yarn knits up very quickly on 3mm double-pointed needles. It is fun to cast on and have a pair of socks finished in a weekend.

These beautiful chartreuse green socks knit using Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran are a very quick project. The yarn and finished socks are very soft and gorgeous to wear. Cashmerino Aran socks are perfect for cosy bed socks in the cold weather or for wearing while curled up on the sofa reading a great book.

Scatness Tam

24 October 2015 By Nicolette Leave a Comment

I’m not known for travelling lightly… My sister can travel for weeks with everything she needs squashed into a small backpack. So it wasn’t unexpected for me to go on holiday to Shetland and bring pattern books and shetland wool from my yarn collection with me. Of course I returned home to Belfast with even more! I however also had squared paper and marker pens for drafting patterns… you just never know when you’ll be inspired. As knitter’s I think we just like to be prepared.

How Opal Creates Beautiful Sock Yarn

23 October 2015 By Nicolette 2 Comments

Have you ever wondered how Opal creates beautiful sock yarn that we have all come to love? There have been so many favourite collections over the years from Opal but one of my personal favourites is Fairies and Elves.

We have 4 of these lovely sock colours available in the Knitting Squirrel’s Yarn Shop but of course stocks, of this now hard to find range, are running low.

Opal Fairies and Elves Poster

I love the colour combinations and most of all how these yarns look when knitted into socks.

Shetland Ponies

18 October 2015 By Nicolette 3 Comments

Shetland Ponies

One of the animals I really wanted to see when we were visiting Shetland were the Shetland Ponies. I’d seen the cute pictures of Shetland ponies wearing fair isle cardigans. Neil bought me a birthday card with the Shetland ponies wearing fair isle cardigans while we were wandering through Lerwick. Very cute.[Read More]
