Explorations in Brioche – Craftsy

8 December 2012 By Nicolette Leave a Comment

Craftsy-Brioche-1web

Explorations in Brioche is an interesting Craftsy class. Have you discovered Craftsy yet? It’s an interactive learning platform, that I first came across in June. With an excellent choice of classes and knowledgeable teachers, many of them have also written books, like Nancy Marchant who teaches the Explorations in Brioche Knitting class.[Read More]

Fingerless Mittens

6 December 2012 By Nicolette 54 Comments

Fingerless-mittens-pattern-1

The fingerless mittens knitting pattern is a quick project that uses a small amount of yarn. I have found that I often have enough yarn left after knitting a pair of socks to knit these.

The pattern was designed for my sister who wanted to knit a pair of fingerless mittens using the lovely Mini Mochi yarn.  I used Trekking sock yarn from my stash in shades of blue, taupe, grey and russet to knit a pair of fingerless mittens for myself. I like using sock yarn to knit fingerless mittens because the wool element gives warmth and comfort while the nylon element adds durability to the mitten. But any 4-ply sock yarn can be used to knit this pattern successfully.[Read More]

How to Wet Block a Lace Cowl

4 December 2012 By Nicolette 5 Comments

Why Wet Block a Lace Cowl?

Wet blocking, although time-consuming, is essential for some lace knit projects as it is the best way of bringing out the beauty of the lace knit patterns. Alternatively, some people like to steam block a lace scarf.

The elegant “Robyn” cowl is designed by Anniken Allis and was published in Lets Knit Magazine.

I knit the cowl as a birthday present for mum.  I used Zenith, one of the lovely hand-dyed sock yarns made by Flamboyance Yarns, that I had in my stash.  The colours are subtle and I loved how they drifted into each other.

The cowl has a pretty shaped edging which needs to be wet-blocked to create the sharp points.

Slouchy Fair Isle Hat

This beautiful slouchy Fairisle hat is inspired by Wild Heather designed by Amanda Jones and published in Irresistible Christmas Gifts to Knit a free pattern booklet that came with a magazine.

As usual, I made changes as I am pretty much incapable of knitting a pattern without tweaking it.[Read More]

Everdeen Beanie

26 November 2012 By Nicolette 1 Comment

Are you looking for a stylish hat pattern? Then the Everdeen Beanie could be your perfect choice.

Everdeen-Beanie-Alpaca-1web

When I saw the photograph of Everdeen Beanie designed by Tanis Gray on the cover of Weekend Hats I immediately ordered the book. Although the version on the cover was a pretty sky blue, I pictured something different in my mind’s eye. I’d wanted a soft, warm, deep red hat for wearing on cool days for a long time. And this hat really fitted the bill.[Read More]

Noro Striped Scarf

25 November 2012 By Nicolette 5 Comments

Ever thought about knitting a long narrow striped scarf?  It looks wonderful and is easy to wear.  I wanted a long narrow scarf that could be wound around my neck a couple of times on a cold day, to keep me cosy.

I’m delighted with how the scarf turned out and wear it often when I am out for a walk.  It is a quick and easy knit for a beginner, and perfect for knitting while relaxing in the evening.[Read More]

Which Colours Make You Feel Amazing?

24 November 2012 By Nicolette 2 Comments

It is wonderful to hand knit a garment which looks beautiful on you.  So, how do you choose colours that enhance your skin tone and look attractive? I find that it is great fun finding which colours look wonderful on you.

Colour-Style-1

It is particularly important to find out which colours look best on you when you are knitting a new scarf, hat or cowl which will be worn next to your face. There is nothing more disappointing than choosing a beautiful yarn in a fabulous colour, spending many hours knitting the new accessory, sewing in the ends, washing and blocking the new scarf, standing in front of the mirror and putting the scarf on for the first time… and instead of making you feel wonderful… something just isn’t quite right… The new scarf joins your other unworn projects and is then given away as a gift.[Read More]
